Motorcycle Safety Tips

For those who enjoy riding a motorcycle, there can be no better feeling than being out on the open road on your bike. It is freeing in a way that you really cannot experience when riding in a car. We get that – our attorneys all ride (or race). Motorcycles can be a fun mode of transportation. Unfortunately, they can also be a uniquely dangerous mode of transportation

Many of the reasons that make motorcycle riding so fun, also make it particularly dangerous. For instance, the openness of the motorcycle also means that it lacks the structural integrity and safety features available in cars and other vehicles. This renders motorcycle riders vulnerable to devastating injuries if involved in a crash. Here, we want to take the time to highlight some safety tips to help motorcyclists stay safe out there on the roads.

Motorcycle Safety Tips

Motorcycle safety begins before you even take your motorcycle out on the road. For instance, be sure to check that your motorcycle is in fully operational mode. Motorcycle maintenance is critically important to keeping riders safe. Before you go out for a ride, check things like your brakes and tire pressure.

You should also be sure that you are wearing proper attire for your ride. This means wearing a helmet! The importance of helmets cannot be understated. Far too many motorcyclists sustain traumatic brain injuries and fatal head injuries in crashes. Additionally, wear clothing that will make you more visible to other drivers. Make sure that you are properly covered by wearing durable pants, long sleeves, and gloves. This can help protect you from road rash in the event of a crash.

Also, check your route before you head out. Take roads that you know to be safe and may be lower in traffic volume. Being familiar with your route can help you avoid being distracted while you are riding. If you can, you should also avoid riding in inclement weather and at night. These can be particularly dangerous times for any drivers and motorcycle riders in particular.

While it can be tempting to fully exploit the freedom that can come with riding a motorcycle, motorcyclists need to remain mindful that they are subject to the same rules of the road as other vehicles. Maintaining safe speeds, safe distances, signaling, and observing traffic signals is critically important. Practicing defensive driving as a motorcyclist can also potentially save your life. Always operate under the assumption that other cars do not see you or are going to make a move that jeopardizes your safety. Be proactive in giving other vehicles a safe amount of space. Make yourself as visible as possible. Motorcyclists are particularly difficult to see because of the size of their ride.

And finally, never drink and drive.
